Frequently Asked Questions

About Neuropsychological Services

What is a neuropsychological evaluation?

A neuropsychological evaluation is an in-depth assessment of cognitive, behavioral, and emotional functioning. It typically includes clinical interviews, standardized testing, and questionnaires to understand how brain functioning affects thinking, mood, and daily life.

Who benefits from a neuropsychological evaluation?

A neuropsychological evaluation may be helpful for individuals experiencing:

  • Memory, attention, or concentration difficulties

  • Learning challenges in children, adolescents, or adults

  • Traumatic brain injury, including concussions or post-concussion symptoms

  • Stroke or neurological conditions (e.g., epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease)

  • Developmental concerns, including ADHD or autism spectrum features

  • Cognitive changes associated with aging

  • Psychological clearance for bariatric surgery, spinal cord stimulation, or other medical procedures

  • The need for school accommodations (IEPs, 504 plans, or academic supports)

What conditions do you evaluate?

We assess cognitive, emotional, and behavioral changes related to medical, neurological, and psychological conditions. Common referrals include:

  • Concussion and traumatic brain injury

  • Dementia (Alzheimer’s disease and other types)

  • Stroke

  • ADHD

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

  • Learning disabilities

  • Mood and anxiety disorders

  • Memory changes

  • Cognitive effects of medical conditions such as epilepsy, autoimmune disorders, or chronic illness

Do you work with children, adults, or both?

Yes. We provide evaluations and short-term treatment for children, adolescents, adults, and older adults.

Appointments & Evaluation Process

What should I expect during the first appointment?

Your first visit typically includes a clinical interview to discuss symptoms, medical history, and goals. Testing may begin the same day or be scheduled for a separate visit, depending on your needs.

How long does testing take?

Most evaluations range from 3 to 8 hours. Testing may be completed in one day or split into multiple sessions to reduce fatigue.

Do I need to bring anything?

Please bring:

  • Photo ID

  • Insurance card (if applicable)

  • Glasses or hearing aids (if applicable)

  • A current medication list

  • Previous medical, school, or imaging records (if available)

Can I take breaks during testing?

Yes. Breaks are provided as needed to ensure comfort and optimal performance.

What kinds of tests will I complete?

Testing includes non-invasive, pencil-and-paper and/or computer-based tasks that measure:

  • Memory

  • Attention and concentration

  • Problem-solving and reasoning

  • Language skills

  • Processing speed

  • Emotional and psychological functioning

These tasks help identify cognitive strengths and areas that may benefit from support.

Results & Reports

How will I receive my results?

You will attend a feedback session where results are explained in detail. You will also receive a comprehensive written report summarizing findings and personalized recommendations.

How long does it take to receive the report?

Reports are typically completed within 2–4 weeks, depending on the complexity of the evaluation.

Will my results be shared with my doctor or school?

With your written permission, results can be shared with healthcare providers, schools, employers, or others involved in your care.

How often should neuropsychological testing be repeated?

Repeat evaluations are recommended when there is a meaningful change in functioning or when updated information is needed for treatment planning, accommodations, or recovery tracking. For many conditions, this is every 1–2 years, though timing varies based on individual needs.

Insurance & Payment

Do you accept insurance?

Many neuropsychological services are covered by insurance, but coverage varies by plan. Our office can help verify benefits prior to your appointment.

What if I don’t have insurance or testing isn’t covered?

We offer self-pay options with transparent pricing and can discuss payment plans if needed.

Is a referral required?

Some insurance plans require a physician referral. Please check with your provider or contact our office for assistance.

Understanding Provider Roles

What is the difference between a neuropsychologist and a psychologist?

  • Psychologist: Focuses on emotional and behavioral health; often provides therapy and mental health assessments.

  • Neuropsychologist: A psychologist with advanced training in brain–behavior relationships who uses detailed cognitive testing to assess how medical or neurological conditions affect thinking and functioning.

What is the difference between a neuropsychologist and a neurologist?

  • Neurologist: A medical doctor (MD or DO) who diagnoses and treats neurological conditions and can prescribe medication and order imaging.

  • Neuropsychologist: Conducts in-depth cognitive and psychological assessments but does not prescribe medication.

For Parents

How do I explain the evaluation to my child?

You can tell your child they’ll be meeting with someone who wants to understand how their brain learns, remembers, and solves problems to help them at school and home. The activities feel like puzzles and games—nothing painful or scary. There are no “right” or “wrong” answers.

Can I stay with my child during testing?

Parents are typically included during the interview portion. For testing, children usually work one-on-one with the clinician to ensure accurate results. Parents are welcome to remain nearby in the waiting area.

What if my child has trouble focusing or sitting still?

We routinely work with children of all attention levels. Evaluations are tailored to each child, with breaks and engagement strategies built in. Please let us know in advance about any attention or behavioral concerns so we can plan appropriately.
